A House with History

You’ll love the Aveiro Arts House, a historic residence with a notable tradition regarding Arts and Culture. Former home of Vasco Branco (1919-2014), a beloved and well-respected painter, ceramist, writer and movie director from Aveiro, our unique family house combines modern amenities with a truly vintage charm.

Vintage charm

Located in the very heart of Aveiro, the charismatic building was designed in the late 50s by Victor Palla, a famous Portuguese architect, designer and illustrator. It faces a small garden, which lies between our house and Aveiro’s main museum: you get all the comforts of staying in the centre of town, while enjoying the serenity of a peaceful street.

Sunny, spacious bedrooms

There are eight sunny, spacious and pleasant private bedrooms available across two floors. On the first floor (The Guesthouse), each bedroom is dedicated to a different art form — Painting, Ceramics, Cinema and Literature — in tribute to the distinct arts cultivated by Vasco Branco. On the second floor (The Arts Residence), each bedroom is dedicated to a different art process — Project, Alchemy, Sketch and Jazz. Besides the bedrooms, in each floor you have free access to two complete bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable living room, and a lovely sunroom.

An authentic experience

Recently converted into a Community Arts Center, the building resembles a house-museum, filled with unique stories that bring out the artistic and cultural contexts of Aveiro and Portugal in contemporaneity. Besides the Guesthouse and the Arts Residency, it also features a gallery, a library and a cinema auditorium, which you can visit on demand.

Former clandestine cinema during the Portuguese dictatorship, our auditorium was built in 1969 and is equipped with 42 seats, a small bar and a projection booth. If you are lucky to coincide, you are absolutely welcome to attend one of the exclusive events that we occasionally host there, such as intimate concerts, poetry readings or independent movie projections.

In the heart of Aveiro

Everything worth visiting is at walking distance: Aveiro’s famous canals, the Municipal Theatre, Vasco Branco’s public works, the several museums or the University; and Aveiro’s stunning beaches are just ten minutes away by car. We’ve prepared a guide with directions to all our favourite places to visit, eat and shop in and around Aveiro. Whenever possible, we’ll be thrilled to show you around ourselves.

Committed hosting

Combining dedicated professionalism with a familiar and informal approach, the Aveiro Arts Crew includes hospitality and tourism professionals, resident artists and other cheerful volunteers. You can usually reach us at the office, located on the ground floor of the building, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm, or at any other time of the day by email or by phone. There’s always someone around to help you out and to ensure that you make the most out of your stay.
