A House with History
You’ll love the Aveiro Arts House, a historic residence with a notable tradition regarding Arts and Culture. Former home of Vasco Branco (1919-2014), a beloved and well-respected painter, ceramist, writer and movie director from Aveiro, our unique family house combines modern amenities with a truly vintage charm.
Located in the very heart of Aveiro, the charismatic building was designed in the late 50s by Victor Palla, a famous Portuguese architect, designer and illustrator. It faces a small garden, which lies between our house and Aveiro’s main museum: you get all the comforts of staying in the centre of town, while enjoying the serenity of a peaceful street.
Sunny, spacious bedrooms
There are eight sunny, spacious and pleasant private bedrooms available across two floors. On the first floor (The Guesthouse), each bedroom is dedicated to a different art form — Painting, Ceramics, Cinema and Literature — in tribute to the distinct arts cultivated by Vasco Branco. On the second floor (The Arts Residence), each bedroom is dedicated to a different art process — Project, Alchemy, Sketch and Jazz. Besides the bedrooms, in each floor you have free access to two complete bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable living room, and a lovely sunroom.
An authentic experience
Recently converted into a Community Arts Center, the building resembles a house-museum, filled with unique stories that bring out the artistic and cultural contexts of Aveiro and Portugal in contemporaneity. Besides the Guesthouse and the Arts Residency, it also features a gallery, a library and a cinema auditorium, which you can visit on demand.
Former clandestine cinema during the Portuguese dictatorship, our auditorium was built in 1969 and is equipped with 42 seats, a small bar and a projection booth. If you are lucky to coincide, you are absolutely welcome to attend one of the exclusive events that we occasionally host there, such as intimate concerts, poetry readings or independent movie projections.
In the heart of Aveiro
Everything worth visiting is at walking distance: Aveiro’s famous canals, the Municipal Theatre, Vasco Branco’s public works, the several museums or the University; and Aveiro’s stunning beaches are just ten minutes away by car. We’ve prepared a guide with directions to all our favourite places to visit, eat and shop in and around Aveiro. Whenever possible, we’ll be thrilled to show you around ourselves.
Combining dedicated professionalism with a familiar and informal approach, the Aveiro Arts Crew includes hospitality and tourism professionals, resident artists and other cheerful volunteers. You can usually reach us at the office, located on the ground floor of the building, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm, or at any other time of the day by email or by phone. There’s always someone around to help you out and to ensure that you make the most out of your stay.
What our guests say
Committed hosting, a perfect location, sky-high cleaning standards and the uniqueness of our space have earned us the Superhost status on Airbnb for almost 2 years in a row and an average evaluation of 4.9 out of 5. Heres’s what some of our guests have to say:
I'm very glad I stumbled upon this place! It was one of the top highlights of my trip to Portugal. Loads of history here, and it attracts a nice set of people who like authentic experiences. The house is a labor of love, for sure, and very well preserved. All in all, such a pleasant vibe. There are several nice spaces to chill out, like the cosy living room and a little enclosed sun room. It's a calm space, which I appreciated. You don't really get to see houses like this, much less live in them.
Thanks to Hugo, Aveiro became one of our "the best of" in Portugal. The history of the house, the artworks (azulejos inside a shower were among our favourite pieces) and furniture, but most of all the people that created this place are so much worth knowing. Hugo's place is in a perfect location too: in a city centre, but on a calm street overlooking a little green square. Great.
I'd been travelling around Portugal and my partner was coming out to meet me for a week, so i wanted to take him somewhere special. But I didn't know just how special this place was. Aveiro as a city is beautiful, but VIC is a real treasure. The restored home of Vasco Branco, a filmmaker, potter, painter and writer of Aveiro, is the passionate project of Hugo and his friends, and you can really feel that warmth and energy. Each bedroom and space is decorated with the artists's work, which was inspiring, as well as a calm and cosy space to spend time in. It felt more like staying with friends than Airbnb. Both truly grateful to Hugo and everyone at VIC for such an amazing week 🙂
It’s worth going to Aveiro simply to visit the Aveiro Arts House. They are the most incredible hosts with an abundance of information about the area. They have gone above and beyond in every aspect. The pride and enthusiasm that they have for the house having lovingly restored it, to its no doubt former glory, is infectious and the perfect tribute to Hugo's family, particularly his grandfather. Do not miss the basement cinema, and all the stories behind it. I feel more like a friend than an Airbnb guest now, and I'm just sorry I couldn't stay longer.
A comfortable, clean, bright, quiet, modern space. Creatively designed with care and imagination in an homage to Hugo's grandfather, who seems to have been a true renaissance man. The hosts are very warm and interesting, and we enjoyed sharing stories across a range of topics. If you have an interest in art, and want to see how these people are creating a community based art space, you'll love your stay here.
Amazing hosts, incredibly friendly, very attentive, well organised, multilingual, and you just feel that what they are doing is what they love. They were super fast in replying and, during my stay, they were available at any time (they live in the same house). The house is beautiful and artistic, and the rooms are cosy, bright and very clean. I slept very well during my 4 days trip since the house is located in a very quiet, yet central street. Also, you have a TV and loudspeakers in the living room. The kitchen and the bathrooms are also very clean. All in all, you have really everything you need and I had a really, really nice stay so thank you again!
The room was very spacious. The entire house is full of amazing artwork by the original owner who is Hugo's grandfather. Honestly, the house itself is like a mini-museum on its own. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Aveiro. 10/10!
My friend and I had a great stay at Hugo's house. The room was spacious and beautifully furnished. Everything was exceptionally clean. The communication was very easy and Hugo provided us upfront with general tips and a map of where to park for free. The house is centrally located, but in a very quiet street. And we loved the breakfast recommendation! We would definitively return 🙂
Very cool project of people who wanted to keep their grandfather's heritage alive. Wonderful house with an open atmosphere and a very dedicated tour through all the rooms. A great place for people who are interested in all kinds of arts. Plus, the house is situated in the city center and Hugo has a lot of recommendations what to do. He even provided us with their own map with places to visit.
